Theun Karelse is an artist, researcher based in Amsterdam. Since 2004 he is a member of the post-disciplinary laboratory FoAM which is aimed at growing resilient and holistic cultures. In recent years his focus has been on field experiments in frontline ecology and urban landscapes. He reports on the intertwining of data systems and natural systems at augmentedecology.com.
During the development of Boskoi an open source smartphone application for navigating the edible landscape and mapping wild food sources, it became clear that mobile technologies were opening up new toolkits for citizen science and for networks between humans and their living environment. They have added to a newly forming branch of the anthropocene; the intertwining of data and media technologies with the ecosphere. This talk will explore such edible landscapes and augmented ecologies.
